The pretérito perfecto is used to talk about actions that have occurred in the recent past, are relevant to the present, or continue up to the present. Additionally, it is used with time expressions such as hoy, esta mañana, este año, ya, todavía no, etc.

The pretérito indefinido is used for actions that happened in the past and are completely finished, without any direct connection to the present. It is often accompanied by specific time expressions such as “ayer”, “el mes pasado”, “hace un rato”, “el año pasado”, etc.
