The latter can be divided into two main categories: alguien and nadie to refer to people, and algo and nada to refer to things. Additionally, <i>alguien <\/i> and <i>nadie <\/i> always refer to people, while <i>algo <\/i> and <i>nada <\/i> always refer to things. I&#8217;m looking for someone who speaks French.<\/p><p>No conozco a <b>nadie <\/b>en esta ciudad. I don&#8217;t know anyone in this city.<\/p><p>Necesito <b>algo <\/b>para el dolor de cabeza. I need something for my headache.<\/p><p>No quiero <b>nada <\/b>de postre. I don&#8217;t want any dessert.<\/p><p>Prepositional complement:<\/p><p>Hablo <i>de <\/i><b>alguien <\/b>que conoces. I&#8217;m talking about someone you know.<\/p><p><i>No <\/i>conf\u00edo en <b>nadie<\/b>. I don&#8217;t trust anyone.<\/p><p>Pienso <i>en <\/i><b>algo <\/b>importante. I don&#8217;t worry about anything.<\/p><p>In the case of <i>alguien <\/i> and <i>nadie<\/i>, they can also function as indirect objects:<\/p><p>Quiero regalarle mi auto a <b>alguien<\/b> que lo aprecie. I want to give my car to someone who appreciates it.<\/p><p>Necesito contarle este secreto a <b>alguien<\/b> de confianza. I need to tell this secret to someone I trust.<\/p><p>No le cuento mis secretos a <b>nadie<\/b>. I wouldn&#8217;t ask anyone in that group for money.<\/p><p>As can be seen in the examples, when <i>alguien <\/i> or <i>nadie <\/i> function as direct or indirect objects, they must be introduced by the preposition <i>a<\/i>, known as the personal a in Spanish. On the other hand, when they function as indirect objects, the redundant indirect object pronoun <i>le <\/i> usually appears.<\/p><p>Veo <b>a<\/b> alguien en la ventana. Unlike other languages, in Spanish it is common and grammatically correct to use two negative elements in the same sentence. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic rules:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When nadie or nada come after the verb, no must be added before the verb:<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> vino <strong>nadie<\/strong>. Nobody came.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> quiero <strong>nada<\/strong>. I don&#8217;t want anything.<\/p>\n<p>When nadie or nada come before the verb, no is not used:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nadie<\/strong> vino. Nobody came.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nada<\/strong> me importa. Nothing matters to me.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of double negation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> he visto a <strong>nadie<\/strong>. I haven&#8217;t seen anyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> hay <strong>nadie<\/strong> en casa. There&#8217;s nobody home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> quiero <strong>nada<\/strong> m\u00e1s. I don&#8217;t want anything else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> entiendo <strong>nada<\/strong> de lo que dices. I don&#8217;t understand anything you&#8217;re saying.<br \/>This does <strong>not <\/strong> mean that the negation is canceled. On the contrary, in Spanish, double negation is grammatically correct in these cases, and omitting the &#8220;no&#8221; removes the meaning of the sentence. Beyond, of course, the difficulties they present, such as the personal a, the redundancy in the case of <i>alguien <\/i> and <i>nadie <\/i> as indirect objects, and double negation, the latter aspect being probably the one that causes the most difficulties for Spanish learners, depending, of course, on their native language or languages.
