In this particular article, we will look at the interrogatives cu\u00e1nto and its variations in gender and number, cu\u00e1ndo, d\u00f3nde, and ad\u00f3nde, all of which are very frequently used in the language. Cu\u00e1nto<\/em> asks about the quantity of a noun when it functions as an adjective or interrogative pronoun, or about the intensity of a verbal action when it functions as an adverb. It has variations in grammatical gender and number: cu\u00e1nto<\/em> (m., s.), cu\u00e1nta<\/em> (f., s.), cu\u00e1ntos<\/em> (m., p.), cu\u00e1ntas<\/em> (f., p.). It functions as an interrogative adjective when it accompanies a noun and agrees with it in grammatical gender and number.<\/p>

In singular, it is used with uncountable nouns:<\/p>

\u00bfCu\u00e1nto dinero tienes?<\/em> (How much money do you have?)
\u00bfCu\u00e1nta harina necesito para la receta?<\/em> (How much flour do I need for the recipe?)<\/p>

In plural, with countable nouns:<\/p>

\u00bfCu\u00e1ntos estudiantes hay en la clase?<\/em> (How many students are there in the class?)
\u00bfCu\u00e1ntas horas trabajas al d\u00eda?<\/em> (How many hours do you work per day?)<\/p>

As an interrogative pronoun, it can refer to a noun mentioned or understood in the sentence, and in this case it also agrees with it in gender and number.<\/p>

Tengo muchos libros en mi casa, pero no s\u00e9 exactamente cu\u00e1ntos.<\/em> (I have many books in my house, but I don’t know exactly how many.)
La receta lleva leche, pero no s\u00e9 cu\u00e1nta se necesita.<\/em> (The recipe uses milk, but I don’t know how much is needed.)<\/p>

It can also refer to nouns that are not mentioned or understood. In this case, the masculine forms are used, both in singular and plural. In these cases, the noun is always omitted. Let’s look at examples.<\/p>

As an interrogative adverb, it accompanies a verb and asks about the intensity or duration of the verbal action. In this case, it is invariable, always using the form cu\u00e1nto<\/em>.<\/p>

Used to ask about prices, equivalencies, or measurements in relation to something.<\/p>

It is not combined with prepositions, and it can be written indistinctly as either ad\u00f3nde<\/em> or a d\u00f3nde<\/em>.<\/p>
