It has variations in grammatical gender and number: <em>cu\u00e1nto<\/em> (m., s.), <em>cu\u00e1nta<\/em> (f., s.), <em>cu\u00e1ntos<\/em> (m., p.), <em>cu\u00e1ntas<\/em> (f., p.). It functions as an interrogative adjective when it accompanies a noun and agrees with it in grammatical gender and number.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\">In singular, it is used with uncountable nouns:<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\"><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1nto dinero tienes?<\/em> (How much money do you have?)<br \/><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1nta harina necesito para la receta?<\/em> (How much flour do I need for the recipe?)<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\">In plural, with countable nouns:<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\"><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1ntos estudiantes hay en la clase?<\/em> (How many students are there in the class?)<br \/><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1ntas horas trabajas al d\u00eda?<\/em> (How many hours do you work per day?)<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\">As an interrogative pronoun, it can refer to a noun mentioned or understood in the sentence, and in this case it also agrees with it in gender and number.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\"><em>Tengo muchos libros en mi casa, pero no s\u00e9 exactamente cu\u00e1ntos.<\/em> (I have many books in my house, but I don&#8217;t know exactly how many.)<br \/><em>La receta lleva leche, pero no s\u00e9 cu\u00e1nta se necesita.<\/em> (The recipe uses milk, but I don&#8217;t know how much is needed.)<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal\">It can also refer to nouns that are not mentioned or understood.
