So, in this article you&#039;ll see examples of that type of conditional sentence, but focus on the grammatical structure of the pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo. The verb <em>haber<\/em> is a very irregular verb, and its conjugation in pret\u00e9rito imperfecto de subjuntivo is no exception: it has a vowel change a \u2192 u in its stem. It does maintain the two conjugation forms of the rest of the verbs in pret\u00e9rito imperfecto de subjuntivo, namely, the endings in -ra and in -se. Also, of course, irregular participles exist in Spanish: in <a href=\"https:\/\/conexionsp.com\/en\/los-participios-pasivos-i-irregular-participles\/\"><strong>this<\/strong> <\/a>article you can read more about this topic. Again, the -ra form is more frequent in spoken language and the -se form sounds more formal or more literary, but I repeat: I myself as a native speaker use both in my spoken language and if you ask me why in a specific case I used one or the other I can&#8217;t explain it.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>The past participle.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">The second element we need to form this verb tense is the past participle of the main verb, which is formed by removing the verb ending (-ar, -er, -ir) to obtain the stem, and to the stem you add -ado for verbs of the first group (hablar \u2192 hablado) and -ido to those of the second and third (comer \u2192 comido, vivir \u2192 vivido).<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-659eb88 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default qodef-elementor-content-no\" data-id=\"659eb88\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4b80ee5\" data-id=\"4b80ee5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-278d244 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"278d244\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Uses.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de10645 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de10645\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Conditional sentences of the third type:<\/strong> this is the most frequent and most important use of this verb tense. In these constructions the clause in pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo, normally introduced by the conjunction <em>si<\/em>, introduces an unreal past condition that was no longer fulfilled.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Structure:<\/strong> Si + <em>pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo<\/em> (+ complements), + condicional compuesto (+ complements).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Si <em>hubieras llegado<\/em> en hora, no habr\u00edas perdido el tren. (If you had arrived on time, you wouldn&#8217;t have missed the train).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Si <em>hubieras estudiado<\/em>, habr\u00edas aprobado el examen. (If you had studied, you would have passed the exam).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">As I was telling you before, focus on the structure of the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo in this case. In the next two articles we&#8217;ll look at these conditional sentences again.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Concessive clauses with &#8220;aunque&#8221;:<\/strong> These introduce a hypothetical situation in the past that didn&#8217;t occur but, had it occurred, would not have changed the outcome of events.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Structure:<\/strong> Aunque + <em>pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo<\/em> (+ complements), + condicional perfecto (+ complements).<\/p><p>Aunque me <em>hubieras llamado<\/em>, no habr\u00eda ido a la fiesta. (You didn&#8217;t call me, but even if you had called me, I wouldn&#8217;t have gone) \/ (Even if you had called me, I wouldn&#8217;t have gone to the party)<\/p><p>Aunque me <em>hubieran ofrecido<\/em> m\u00e1s dinero, no habr\u00eda aceptado el trabajo. (They didn&#8217;t offer more money, but even in that case, I wouldn&#8217;t have accepted it) \/ (Even if they had offered me more money, I wouldn&#8217;t have accepted the job)<\/p><p>Aunque <em>hubi\u00e9ramos salido<\/em> antes, habr\u00edamos llegado tarde por el tr\u00e1fico. (We didn&#8217;t leave earlier, but even if we had done so, we would have arrived late) \/ (Even if we had left earlier, we would have arrived late because of the traffic)<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Expressions of doubt, emotion or judgment about the past:<\/strong> generally accompanied by verbs in preterite tenses of indefinido, expressing a past reaction to an event prior to that reaction.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Yo dudaba que ellos <em>hubieran dicho<\/em> la verdad. (I doubted that they had told the truth).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">\u00c9l no cre\u00eda que t\u00fa <em>hubieras hecho<\/em> eso. (He didn&#8217;t believe that you had done that).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Me alegr\u00e9 de que <em>hubieras conseguido<\/em> el trabajo. (I was happy that you had gotten the job).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Expressing wishes or regrets about the past.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Ojal\u00e1 <em>hubi\u00e9ramos comprado<\/em> esa casa. (I wish we had bought that house). (But we didn&#8217;t buy it).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Me gustar\u00eda que <em>hubieras estado<\/em> en mi boda. (I would have liked you to have been at my wedding). (But you weren&#8217;t).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Ojal\u00e1 no <em>hubiera dicho<\/em> eso. (I wish I hadn&#8217;t said that).(But I said it).<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">These are not all the uses of the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo, but they are the most frequent ones in spoken language.
