The structures we will cover are widely used in both spoken and written language. We will examine their basic structure, usage examples, and some common colloquial variants that break the basic rules for forming these sentences, which could be considered errors, although some of these variants have been accepted by the RAE. When we use this type of conditional, we are implicitly acknowledging that the condition is not met in reality. For example, when someone says Si tuviera un mill\u00f3n de euros, dejar\u00eda mi trabajo (If I had a million euros, I would quit my job), it is clear that the person does not have a million euros. The condition is unreal or very unlikely.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Grammatical structure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Si + pret\u00e9rito imperfecto de subjuntivo + condicional simple. This structure is used for different purposes. Let&#8217;s look at some examples:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Situations contrary to present reality:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si viviera en Par\u00eds, visitar\u00eda el Louvre cada semana. (If I lived in Paris, I would visit the Louvre every week.) But I don&#8217;t live in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si fuera biling\u00fce, trabajar\u00eda como traductor. (If I were bilingual, I would work as a translator.) But I&#8217;m not bilingual.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si no tuviera miedo de volar, viajar\u00eda m\u00e1s a menudo. (If I weren&#8217;t afraid of flying, I would travel more often.) But I am afraid of flying.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Impossible or unlikely wishes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si pudiera volar, no necesitar\u00eda coche. (If I could fly, I wouldn&#8217;t need a car.) Impossible: humans cannot fly.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si me tocara la loter\u00eda, comprar\u00eda una isla. (If I won the lottery, I would buy an island.) Very unlikely.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si fuera invisible, entrar\u00eda gratis al cine. (If I were invisible, I would get into the cinema for free.) Impossible: I cannot be invisible.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si yo fuera t\u00fa, hablar\u00eda con tu jefe sobre ese problema. (If I were you, I would talk to your boss about that problem.)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si estuviera en tu lugar, no me preocupar\u00eda tanto. (If I were in your shoes, I wouldn&#8217;t worry so much.)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si yo fuera t\u00fa, estudiar\u00eda m\u00e1s para ese examen. (If I were you, I would study more for that exam.)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Imaginary situations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si el mundo fuera perfecto, no habr\u00eda guerras. (If the world were perfect, there would be no wars.)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si los animales hablaran, \u00bfqu\u00e9 nos dir\u00edan? (If animals could talk, what would they tell us?)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si pudieras cambiar algo de tu pasado, \u00bfqu\u00e9 ser\u00eda? They express what would have happened if the circumstances had been different. It is the perfect structure for expressing regret, reproach, speculation about the past, and reflection on missed opportunities.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Grammatical structure.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Si + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo + condicional compuesto. <a href=\"https:\/\/conexionsp.com\/en\/si-hubieras-visto-como-neveba-the-preterito-pluscuamperfecto-de-subjuntivo\/\"><strong>Here<\/strong><\/a> you can read about the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo and <a href=\"https:\/\/conexionsp.com\/en\/el-ladron-se-habria-escapado-por-una-ventana-the-condicional-compuesto\/\"><strong>here<\/strong> <\/a>about the condicional compuesto. Let&#8217;s look at some usage examples.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Expressing regret:<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si te hubiera visto, te habr\u00eda saludado. (If I had seen you, I would have said hello.) But I didn&#8217;t see you.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si me hubiera levantado m\u00e1s temprano, no habr\u00eda perdido el tren. (If I had gotten up earlier, I wouldn&#8217;t have missed the train.) But I got up late.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si hubiera ahorrado m\u00e1s dinero, habr\u00eda comprado esa casa. (If I had saved more money, I would have bought that house.) But I didn&#8217;t save enough.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Reproaches or criticism:<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si me hubieras escuchado, no habr\u00edas cometido ese error. (If you had listened to me, you wouldn&#8217;t have made that mistake.) But you didn&#8217;t listen to me.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si hubieran estudiado, habr\u00edan aprobado el examen. (If they had studied, they would have passed the exam.) But they didn&#8217;t study.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si hubieras llegado a tiempo, habr\u00edas conocido a mi hermana. (If you had arrived on time, you would have met my sister.) But you arrived late.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Speculations about the past:<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si los dinosaurios no se hubieran extinguido, habr\u00edan evolucionado a diferentes especies. (If the dinosaurs hadn&#8217;t gone extinct, they would have evolved into different species.)<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si Col\u00f3n no hubiera descubierto Am\u00e9rica, otro explorador lo habr\u00eda hecho. (If Columbus hadn&#8217;t discovered America, another explorer would have.)<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si hubiera nacido en otra \u00e9poca, mi vida habr\u00eda sido completamente diferente. (If I had been born in another era, my life would have been completely different.)<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Variantes.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">In some varieties of Spanish, the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo is used instead of the condicional compuesto: instead of <em>si Col\u00f3n no hubiera descubierto Am\u00e9rica, otro explorador lo habr\u00eda hecho<\/em> (If Columbus hadn&#8217;t discovered America, another explorer would have), you may hear <em>si Col\u00f3n no hubiera descubierto Am\u00e9rica, otro explorador lo hubiera hecho<\/em>. This usage is accepted by the RAE.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">In other variants the opposite occurs: the condicional compuesto is used instead of the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo: instead of <em>si me hubieras escuchado, no habr\u00edas cometido ese error<\/em> (If you had listened to me, you wouldn&#8217;t have made that mistake), you may hear <em>si me habr\u00edas escuchado, no habr\u00edas cometido ese error<\/em>. This usage is not recommended.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Condicional mixto.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Sometimes we find conditional sentences made up of a condition in the past, in the pret\u00e9rito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo, and a consequence in the present, in the condicional simple.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si hubiera estudiado medicina, ahora ser\u00eda doctor. (If I had studied medicine, I would now be a doctor.) Studying was in the past; being a doctor is the present.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si no hubieras roto con Mar\u00eda, ahora estar\u00edas casado con ella. (If you hadn&#8217;t broken up with Mar\u00eda, you would now be married to her.) Breaking up was in the past; being married would be now.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Si me hubiera mudado a Barcelona, ahora vivir\u00eda cerca del mar. (If I had moved to Barcelona, I would now live near the sea.) Moving was a past option; living is a present situation.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">At first glance, this topic may seem very complicated to understand.
